Helping Young People Develop Healthy
Thinking, Emotional and Behavioural Skills
The Beginning
This programme was developed in response to what I believe is an enormous cavity within education and support services for young adults. I make this claim as an accomplished teacher, Coaching- Psychologist and Counsellor with many years of experience in working with young adults. Time spent with hundreds of teenagers taught me a great deal about the nature of their struggles as they teeter on the edge of adulthood. I also have two of my own to add yet another layer of experience!
Their challenges, I suggest, lie on a continuum ranging from extremely serious to vaguely irritating. All struggles, large or small have the capacity to block educational attainment, stifle happiness and cause psychological problems if not managed. It seemed strikingly obvious that many of these young adults just didn’t possess the insight or know- how to effectively work their way through set backs, problems, challenges. Neither did they seem too successful at ‘bouncing back’ from adversity. What I witnessed was young adults locked into unproductive ways of thinking feeling and behaving that sent them rocketing towards even greater difficulties.
What also struck me was that in searching for solutions, some would seek guidance from trusted adults whilst many turned to their equally as under – equipped friends to help navigate them through. In my experience, the consequences of the latter were often best viewed from behind shuttered eye lids!
My Observations
And countless hours spent supporting overwhelmed, stressed, unhappy, lost, unmotivated young people led me to consider a vital question, “what if they were taught skills that helped them make better decisions, build confidence, nurture lasting friendships, manage their emotions, and thinking?”. Surely, I posited, this would establish the grounds for resiliency to flourish and nurture educational, personal and social success. I became intrigued and stimulated to find out more. Ultimately this led me to complete a Masters Degree through which I conducted my own research, seeking answers to questions I posed.
The Outcome
What I discovered was compelling evidence for the use of coaching interventions and taught life skills for developing resilience, increasing educational potential and enhancing psychological well-being. Essentially,
it seems that young adults can learn to become more adept at managing their internal world, and deal more effectively with the stresses and pressures of this crazily complex outer world.
"The reality of young adult's pain and need is clear to see; there are hurting young people everywhere. It is my mission to share with young people the skills and knowledge that could make a real difference to their lives".
